Black frame or black lens – what’s the difference?
When we talk about black ski goggles, the colour can refer to both the frame and the lens.
Reuben Black and Claude Black both have a black frame and come with a black Category 3 lens. The lens has a neutral tint and is designed for bright and sunny conditions.
The frame and lens are separate components. Thanks to the magnetic lens system, you can keep the black frame and switch to another lens when the light changes.
Reuben Black and Claude Black
Corlin offers two ski goggle models in black: Reuben Black and Claude Black. Both come with a black Category 3 lens fitted, but differ in frame shape and compatible lenses.
Black Category 3 lenses
The black lens has a neutral tint that reduces the amount of visible light reaching your eyes while keeping colours relatively natural.
Reuben Lens Black and Claude Lens Black are both Category 3. Under EN ISO 12312-1:2022, this corresponds to visible light transmission of 8–18%, making them suitable for bright and sunny conditions.
Every Corlin lens offers UV400 protection, regardless of colour or lens category.

Black is not a mirrored lens
The black lenses for Reuben and Claude have a neutral tint without a mirror finish.
If you prefer a reflective surface, Reuben Lens Silver and Claude Lens Silver are both available with a mirrored finish. Reuben is also compatible with additional mirrored lens options.
How to build an all-black setup
For a completely black setup, the frame and lens create most of the look.
Frame
Choose Reuben Black or Claude Black. Both come with a black Category 3 lens, but have different frame shapes and their own ranges of compatible lenses.
Lens
The black lens gives the goggles a clean, understated look and is designed for bright and sunny conditions. When the light changes, it can be swapped for a lighter lens in seconds.
Strap
Reuben Black comes with a black strap that can also be changed. Claude does not have an interchangeable strap.
Black or silver – which Category 3 lens should you choose?
Both the black and silver lenses are Category 3 and designed for bright and sunny conditions. The most noticeable difference is the finish.
Black has a neutral tint without a mirror finish for a clean, understated look.
Silver has a reflective mirrored surface for a more distinctive finish.
Since both options belong to the same lens category, the choice between black and silver comes down primarily to which finish you prefer.
When the light gets weaker, lens category becomes more important than finish. In those conditions, we recommend switching to a lighter lens.
When should you use a black Category 3 lens?
A black Category 3 lens is designed for bright and sunny days on the mountain, when light levels are high and the snow reflects a significant amount of light.
That is also why Reuben and Claude come with a Category 3 lens fitted as standard.
For overcast weather, snowfall or lower visibility, a lighter lens is a better choice. Orange and pink Category 1 lenses allow more visible light through and are designed for lower-light conditions.
For night skiing on illuminated slopes, clear lenses are also available.
Pairing your black Category 3 lens with a lighter spare lens gives you greater flexibility as conditions change throughout the day or season.
How to change the lens
Magnets in the frame hold the lens securely in place. Lift it off and position the next lens – the change takes only seconds and can be done while wearing ski gloves.
Questions about black ski goggles
What is the difference between a black ski goggle frame and a black lens?
The frame determines the base shape and colour of the ski goggle, while the lens affects both the look and the amount of visible light that passes through.
Reuben Black and Claude Black come with a black frame and a black Category 3 lens. Because the lenses are interchangeable, you can later switch to another colour or lens category without changing the frame.
Are black ski goggles too dark for skiing?
Not in the right conditions. The black lenses for Reuben and Claude are Category 3 and designed for bright and sunny days.
For overcast weather, snowfall or night skiing, we recommend switching to a lighter lens.
Do black lenses work in flat light or at night?
A Category 3 lens is primarily intended for brighter conditions and is therefore not our recommended choice for flat light or night skiing.
For overcast days and snowfall, an orange or pink Category 1 lens is a better option. For night skiing on illuminated slopes, we recommend a clear lens.
Can I put a black lens on any Corlin ski goggle?
No. Reuben and Claude use different lens shapes.
Reuben Lens Black fits all Reuben frames, while Claude Lens Black fits all Claude frames. Lenses cannot be swapped between the two model families.
Do you make a mirrored or reflective black lens?
No. The black lenses have a neutral tint without a mirror or revo finish.
If you prefer a mirrored lens, Reuben Lens Silver and Claude Lens Silver are both available. Reuben also has additional mirrored options, including Revo Orange and Light Blue.
Do the black lenses offer UV protection?
Yes. Every Corlin lens offers UV400 protection, including the lighter and clear options.
UV protection and lens darkness are separate properties. A darker lens allows less visible light through, but does not in itself mean greater UV protection.
Can I use black ski goggles for snowboarding?
Yes. Reuben and Claude are suitable for both skiing and snowboarding. The same fundamentals apply to both: a comfortable fit, UV protection and a lens suited to the current light conditions.
What comes with Corlin black ski goggles?
Reuben Black and Claude Black come with a black Category 3 lens fitted and a protective faux-leather case.
