Which lens do you use in low light?
A Category 1 in orange or pink when the light is genuinely flat, and a Category 2 when the day keeps changing. Four different problems, all called poor visibility
Low light is a single phrase covering four situations that behave differently. Sorting out which one you are in is most of the decision, because two of them are a lens problem, one is barely a lens problem at all, and one is not low light in the first place.
Overcast and shadowless. There is plenty of light on a grey day. What there is not is shadow, and shadow is how you see shape. Cloud turns the sky into one large diffuser, the snow stops casting anything, and a slope you could read all morning goes blank. You are not short of light here, you are short of contrast, and that is a tint problem rather than a brightness problem.
Falling snow. The same missing contrast, plus flakes crossing your field of view a few centimetres from the lens. Your eyes keep catching on the near thing while the surface twenty metres out goes soft. A warm tint helps the surface; nothing helps the flakes except slowing down.
Fog. This is the honest one. Fog scatters the light in the air between you and the slope, and no lens can put back contrast that the air has already taken away. A warm Category 1 is still the best of the options, and it is a smaller improvement than it is in snowfall. Anyone promising you a fog lens is selling you something.
Dusk, trees and floodlights. Here the light really is running out, which is a different question with a different answer: the lightest tint you own while there is still daylight, and after dark the clear lens, which has no tint at all. That case has its own page: clear ski goggles.
Why a warm tint gives the surface back
Flat light is diffuse skylight, and skylight is weighted towards the blue end. Hold that end back and what reaches your eye has more difference between the bright parts of the snow and the darker ones. That difference is contrast, and contrast is what tells you where the lip, the rut and the ice are before you are on them.
That is the whole argument for orange and pink on a grey day. They are warm tints, they let considerably more light through than the 8% to 18% of a Category 3, and they trade a little color accuracy for a lot of definition. On a bluebird day that trade is the wrong way round, which is why nobody wears one lens all season.
The mistake in the other direction is worth naming, because it is the common one: reaching for the darkest lens you own when visibility drops. A Category 3, mirrored or plain, removes light from a scene that had none to spare. What each category is built for is set out in the lens guide.
Category 1 or Category 2, and which lens that means
Two categories cover low light, and choosing between them is a question about your season rather than about a single day.
Category 1 is the flat-day lens. It lets the most light through of anything in the range apart from the clear one, and it is the right answer when grey days are the norm where you ski. Four lenses sit here: Reuben Lens Orange and Claude Lens Orange, plus Reuben Lens Pink and Claude Lens Pink. Orange and pink are both Category 1, so between those two it is a look rather than a performance decision.
Category 2 is the compromise lens, for the day that will not commit. Bright at nine, grey by two, and no appetite for changing anything halfway up a lift. Four lenses sit here too: Reuben Lens Forest Green and Claude Lens Blue, plus Reuben Lens Pink Yellow and Claude Lens Pink Yellow. If most of your days change their mind, a Category 2 does more work than a second Category 1 would.

Three things get blamed on the goggle at the end of a bad run, and they have different fixes. This is the quickest way to tell them apart.
It cleared when you started moving. That was the inside of the lens, not the light. Air across the lens clears a film, and the habits that stop it coming back are here: anti-fog ski goggles.
The world stayed uniformly white and flat. That was the light, and a warmer and lighter lens is the answer. If you are on the Category 3 that came in the box, this is the day it is worst at.
Close up was sharp and far away was soft. That was snow or fog in the air between you and the slope. A Category 1 sharpens what is left, and the rest is speed.

Questions about ski goggles for low light
Which ski goggle lens is best for low light?
A Category 1, which in the range means orange or pink on either frame. It lets considerably more light through than the Category 3 fitted in the box, and the warm tint lifts the contrast a grey day takes away.
If your days tend to change rather than stay grey, a Category 2 is the better single answer: Reuben Lens Forest Green, Claude Lens Blue, or either Pink Yellow.
Is a clear lens good for flat light?
No, and it is the most common mix-up in this part of the range. A clear lens adds no tint, so it hands you all the light there is without doing anything about contrast, and on a grey day the missing piece is contrast.
Clear earns its place after dark, under floodlights. In daylight a Category 1 is what you want.
What lens should I use for skiing in fog?
A Category 1 in orange or pink, and with realistic expectations. Fog scatters light in the air between you and the snow, and a lens cannot restore contrast that never reached it.
Two things help more than the lens does: slowing down, and making sure the problem is fog outside the goggle rather than a film on the inside of it.
What lens for snowfall?
The same Category 1 warm tint. Snowfall removes the shadows that show you the shape of the surface, and a warm tint puts back some of the difference between light and dark.
The flakes themselves are not a lens problem. They cross your field of view close to your face, and no tint changes that.
Category 1 or Category 2 for cloudy days?
Category 1 if cloud is the normal state where you ski, because it is the lens built for exactly that light. Category 2 if your days start bright and turn, because it sits between the box lens and a Category 1.
Both are 499 SEK, so the decision is about which day you meet most often rather than about price.
Is there one lens that covers both bright sun and flat light?
A Category 2 is the closest thing to it, and it is a compromise by design: less light through than a Category 1, more than the Category 3 in the box.
If you ski both ends of the range regularly, two lenses is the honest answer, and the second one is the cheap half of the goggle.
Do I need a different lens for night skiing?
Yes, and it is not a low-light lens. Night under floodlights is the clear lens, which has no tint at all so it takes nothing away from what the lamps give you.
A Category 1 is a daylight lens. The two get mixed up because both problems get called poor light, but one is missing contrast and the other is missing light.
