Tortoise glasses are frames with a tortoiseshell pattern, a pattern in brown, golden and amber tones. The pattern originally imitated turtle shell, but today the frames are made of acetate. Why is it called tortoise?
The pattern imitates the shell of sea turtles, which was once used for eyeglass frames and combs. Today no real turtle shell is used, and the pattern is created in acetate.
The acetate is made from layers in different colors that are pressed together into blocks. When the frame is milled from the block, the pattern turns out slightly different for every frame.
Do tortoise glasses suit everyone?
Tortoise suits most people and is a good choice if you want a frame that stands out without taking over. The brown tones are softer than black and blend more easily with the skin.
The pattern suits warm skin tones and brown, red and blonde hair particularly well. If you have a cool skin tone and dark hair, black can give clearer contrast. If you are unsure, a darker tortoise like Jimi or Romy can be a good middle ground.
